Last weekend, we headed up to Sebastopol for International Passive House Open Days and visited Windhorse Orchard with Studio Pear (@studio_pear). This family-led renovation, situated in the wildland–urban interface, is being transformed into a Passive House and Living Building Challenge home—one of the most ecologically sustainable residential projects in the country.

Walking the site, you feel how deeply Kristin and Jason Nichols have woven building science into daily life: a super-insulated, airtight envelope, non-toxic materials, carbon-sequestering insulation, greywater systems, and a restored oak savanna landscape that turns the whole property into regenerative infrastructure.

Building orientation and form are crucial for energy efficiency. Ideally, buildings are positioned to capture sunlight and heat appropriately for the climate and design. This improves energy performance and natural lighting.

[Passive House]
International Passive House Open Days

Passive House Network organized the International Passive House Open Days event, featuring various projects one can visit. The closest open house to me was in Sacramento. Taking advantage of my child's summer break, we visited the site.

The comfort and benefits of Passive House design were evident during our visit. Despite the outdoor temperature being 37°C, the indoor temperature remained at 28°C without air conditioning. This highlights the importance of resilient building designs in the face of global warming.

Other features of this house include high airtightness, which improves energy efficiency and indoor air quality by keeping out allergens, wildfire smoke, and vehicle emissions.

International Passive House Open Days這個活動，在各地有很多passive house響應；距離我最近的一個open house在Sacramento，剛好小孩暑假，平常在家耳濡目染，卻沒什麼機會看看工地現場，正好也順便帶他來看看。

之前我們對於什麼是Passive House（被動房)有分成很多篇幅介紹，從保溫，門窗，斷熱設計，防水氣密但透氣，都有內容可以參照，唯一還沒寫的部份只有全熱交換機和通風系統，概念都是簡單的熱力學和物理，不是火箭科學。

Passive House的優點和舒適性是全面性的，這一點在我們參觀時，室外37度攝氏的高溫但室內在完全沒開空調的情況下還維持在28攝氏度，就可以馬上感覺出來。全球暖化氣溫不斷創新高，要怎樣讓新的建築設計變得更resilient，只會變得越來越重要。

另外，因為Passive House的認證都需要通過blower door test，確保它的高度氣密性（不得高過0.6ACH＠50 pascals)，除了確保室內冷／暖氣不會外洩（節能)，也保障室內生活空間的空氣品質，不受外部環境影響，例如過敏季節，山火季節，車輛等廢氣，不容易進到室內（註二)。

附圖中有出現全熱交換機的照片，同時內牆敷設的白色INTELO不是一般常見的防水布，是一種透氣性會隨溫濕度改變的特殊材料，冬天是moisture barrier，夏天則可以透氣。

讀者可以特別注意入口大門的斷面，有二寸厚，外覆實木，內芯是保溫板；窗戶都是之前介紹過的歐式tilt-n-turn三層玻璃窗；近來美國物價狂飆，相較之下，很多歐州進口的材料和預製房屋，價格都已經接近美國的中端產品。

內牆保溫是天然羊毛，雖然單價較高，但屋主希望能儘可能的使用天然材料，來減少過敏和化學物質可能產生的危害，和對環境造成的負面影響。外牆保溫使用是用hemp(麻類植物纖維，不要想太多)製成的2"保溫板。這是一個從LCA(Life Cycle生命周期)出發，減少建築碳足跡的絕佳示範。

建築師是行業裡堅持只做Passive House而小有名的Bronwyn Barry，很開心可以有機會終於見上一面，順便和她討教一些開業的心得。

負責施工的Good Space Builder團隊則很開心碰到另一個也是做Passive House的建築師，不知道是不是因為這樣，解說特別徹底，恨不得整個拆了給看一般。

這種不怕看不怕你問的施工團隊，都對品質非常有自信；比起信口開河但問題都蓋在看不到地方者，我真的只想和好的單位合作，也希望將來有機會將這些好的單位，介紹給想和我們一起實現夢想的業主。

[EN] Wood construction can be divided into linear and planar systems.
The linear system, also known as "post-and-beam," uses columns and beams, allowing for large openings and flexibility for future adjustments. Historically, intricate woodworking techniques were used, but modern methods often incorporate metal connectors for seismic resistance.
The planar system, originating in the 19th-century US and known as the "2x4 method," combines wall panels and standardized lumber, making it suitable for rapid production and industrialization. Structural reinforcement is achieved with additional metal connectors and increased use of nails and plywood.

一般我們想到的木構造，其實可以根據構造系統，拆分成二種形式，可以用線和面的幾何概念來理解。

第一種是以線形構造，也就是以柱、梁為連接形式的系統，在日本叫做”在来（軸組）”工法，同時也是東方傳統木構造建築的構造系統。
在台灣、日本及中國的傳統廟宇、日式古民家都是這種以線為構成的柱梁構造；
也因為這樣，可以在柱和柱之間做大面積的開口。
早期的柱梁以榫卯相接，到現今，因為榫卯製作需要較高的技術和工藝水平，同時為了抗震，也有金屬連接件(金具)可以選擇。在需要做結構加強、對抗水平向剪力的部位，會用斜撐來強化轉角等部位。
以柱梁形式構成的結構，在日後需要對空間進行調整時，會有較大的彈性。

第二種是面式結構，以19世紀始於美國的2x4工法為代表，將壁面(合板)和2x4、2x6等制式的木構件相結合而成，在日本稱作”枠組”工法；如果照日文直譯，枠(waku)有框的意思。
2x4構法在美國一般又叫做framing construction，不知道是不是直譯的關係，畢竟在日本，枠組構法是近代才開始出現的較新木構造形式。
這種構造的特性是技術含量低，所有的構件都可以標準化，適合快速生產和建造(或粗製濫造)，也是20世紀開始出現的預製和工業化的基礎。
枠組構件的連接都是金屬構件，結構需要加強的地方，就是用更多的金屬構件來搞定，比如在剪力牆二端，一支2x6不夠，就來二支，不夠再往上加，和基礎連接的部位就用Hold down，面材和木構件之間增加釘子的數量，一邊不夠就內外二側都加上夾板，夾板的厚度也可以增加。
如此簡單粗暴，而且有效。

枠組近年也開始在日本流行，也有將軸組和枠組混合的做法，至於哪一種比較好其實沒有定論。
這篇短文只對這二種常見的東西方木構造做一個概括的介紹，木構造現在也開始在台灣流行，雖然常見的混凝土一體澆築成形複雜，但只要掌握木材的特性，做好防水、防潮和構造設計，就能創造出比混凝土構造更舒適健康又友善環境的居住空間。

The City of Concord is progressing with plans to redevelop the former Concord Naval Weapons Station (CNWS) into a sustainable, mixed-use community. Spanning 2,300 acres and projected to unfold over the next 40 years, this project aims to transform the decommissioned military site into a vibrant urban area.

The development will feature 12,200 homes, 6 million square feet of commercial space, and 880 acres of open space. Additionally, 2,600 acres to the east will be gifted to the East Bay Regional Park District for the new Thurgood Marshall Regional Park.

In March, the Concord City Council approved a conceptual plan and accepted a term sheet from Brookfield Properties, the chosen developer, for their commitment to sustainability and community inclusivity. Key features include:

Sustainable Development: Emphasis on green building, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation.
Affordable Housing: A large portion of low/ moderate-income housing.
Economic Growth: Attraction of businesses and job creation.
Community Facilities: Development of schools, healthcare facilities, and recreational centers.

Residents' concerns include traffic and congestion, environmental impact, affordable housing, and community involvement. The city plans to address these concerns by enhancing public transportation and infrastructure, prioritizing sustainable practices and green spaces, ensuring affordable housing to prevent displacement, and maintaining ongoing engagement with the community to meet their needs.

這個月中，我們受Concord市長的邀請，去參加了海軍兵工廠 (CNWS) 這個超大型開發計劃的說明會。這個開發案總面積2,300英畝(acre)，預計在未來40年內展開，目標是將這個退役的軍事基地轉變為包含住宅、商業、學校和公園的新城市。東側毗鄰的2,600英畝將贈予東灣地區公園管理局。

今年3月，Concord市議會選定Brookfield Properties為開發商，因其概念方案注重可持續發展和社區包容性。主要建設內容包括：綠色建築、可再生能源、綠色交通、可負擔住房，以及學校、醫療設施和娛樂中心。

居民關注的問題有交通擁堵、環境衝擊，和社區參與等。Concord將通過加強公共交通和基礎設施，確保可負擔住房防止居民流失，並保持與社區的持續互動來解決這些問題。

[Wildfire Defense] Part 3 - Defensible Space

Defensible space is the buffer between your home and the wildland area that helps prevent the spread of wildfires. It is essential for protecting your property and ensuring the safety of your family and community. Defensible space is divided into zones, each with specific guidelines:

Zone 0 (0-5 feet), Ember-Resistant Zone:
This is the immediate zone around your house and should be free of all flammable materials. Use hardscape materials such as gravel, pavers, and concrete. Regularly remove dead vegetation and any combustible items. Keep branches trimmed 10 feet away from chimneys and stovepipes.

Zone 1 (5-30 feet), Home Protection Zone:

Defensible space is the buffer between your home and the wildland area that helps prevent the spread of wildfires. It is essential for protecting your property and ensuring the safety of your family and community. Defensible space is divided into zones, each with specific guidelines:

Zone 0 (0-5 feet), Ember-Resistant Zone:
This is the immediate zone around your house and should be free of all flammable materials. Use hardscape materials such as gravel, pavers, and concrete. Regularly remove dead vegetation and any combustible items. Keep branches trimmed 10 feet away from chimneys and stovepipes.

Zone 1 (5-30 feet), Home Protection Zone:

USGS studies on over 40,000 structures and the Camp Fire analysis have highlighted crucial home features for wildfire resistance. This article focuses on home hardening and the impact of topography and landscaping on fire survivability.

Wildland-urban interface (WUI) refers to regions where homes and businesses are close to wildland vegetation, increasing the risk of wildfire exposure. In the image included, all areas in yellow are designated WUI.

Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) refers to areas classified by the state based on their wildfire risk level. Very-High and High-risk zones require stricter building and vegetation management standards.

It's vital to grasp the dynamic nature of the WUI and FHSZ maps. These areas are not static; the WUI zone expands by about 2 million acres annually due to human development and increased density. The new FHSZ maps, for instance, were just released earlier this year. This underscores the need for regular updates and vigilance in your wildfire defense strategy.

[EN]Ginza SIX (G SIX) is a commercial space in Tokyo's Ginza, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi with interiors by CURIOSITY led by Gwenael Nicolas. A successful commercial space should have not only good flow and interior design but also regular events and art displays, like G SIX’s atrium featuring rotating installations, currently showing Kenji Yanobe's "Big Cat Bang."

G SIX, 也叫Ginza SIX, 是一個位於東京銀座的商業空間。
建築由谷口吉生(Yoshio Taniguchi)設計，室內是由Gwenael Nicolas主持的CURIOSITY操刀。

關於谷口的幾何量體特色和強迫症般的建築細節處理，有非常多的可看性，知名的案子包括紐約MOMA新館及東京國立博物館法隆寺寶物館等，可以書寫的篇幅很多，後續有機會再一個個介紹。

一個吸引人的商業空間，好的流線規劃和室內設計只是基礎(雖然個人覺得這個室內做得真的很棒），入駐商家及公共空間的定期活動、展示才是能否長期吸引人流的關鍵。

G SIX最大的特色應該就是它的中庭，除了定期輪替的大型藝術裝置，還有散佈在各角落，由例如TeamLab等製作的裝置；此外，樓上的蔦屋書店也常有配合作家的小型展出，屋頂花園也是在這裡走累了很好的休息點。

目前中庭懸掛展出的的是日本藝術家Kenji Yanobe (矢延憲司)，用Taro Okamoto (岡本太郎)的太陽之塔所作的二次創作”Big Cat Bang"，滿天的太空貓咪，可愛又科幻，現場還有扭蛋機和周邊，藝術和商業結合還是商業化，都很徹底；但對此從不避諱還對外宣稱老子就是撈的一號應該還是村上隆吧?

這個漫天貓咪飛舞的作品其實背後有一個虛構的故事，我把它貼在留言區給有興趣的人點擊觀看。

[Bay Area Discovery Museum]

Last weekend, we explored the Bay Area Discovery Museum and captured these photos at the "How Things Work" pavilion. One exhibit that caught my eye featured a chimney with a flap you can open and close to observe airflow.

This "flap" is known as a chimney damper, a metal plate or valve located at the base or top of the chimney flue. When closed, it prevents cold drafts from entering your home and keeps warm air inside, helping you save on heating costs.

When using the fireplace, the damper should be open to allow smoke and harmful gases to escape safely through the flue. Regular maintenance ensures the damper functions properly, enhancing both energy efficiency and safety in your home.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is impressively designed, featuring numerous interactive exhibits and a spacious outdoor play area. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Olson Kundig, famous for their kinetic architecture, the museum is a marvel of creativity and innovation.

As architects, we use physical models for studying and visualization, a practice that underscores our belief in architecture as a unique three-dimensional, continuous, and five-sense experience.
Sometimes, the model per se becomes a new canvas that invites new layers of creativity, which we love and embrace.

This photo was taken many years ago when I had the wonderful opportunity to work in China and meet many talented people. Some of them now have their own boutique studios in Asian cities, where they continue to create contemporary and experimental works that inspire their peers and nurture the next generation.

[Straw Bale Homes]

Straw bale construction, an ancient technique, is making a modern comeback due to its sustainability and energy efficiency. Originating in late 19th century Nebraska, it became popular because traditional building materials were scarce.
Today, eco-conscious builders are rediscovering its benefits. Straw bales offer excellent thermal and acoustic insulation and are remarkably eco-friendly. They are a cost-effective solution, especially in agricultural areas where straw is abundant. Additionally, their density makes them surprisingly fire-resistant. However, they can be susceptible to moisture and pests if not properly maintained. In North America, the straw bale movement has grown significantly. Recent advancements include prefabricated straw bale panels that integrate with modern construction techniques, offering faster and more reliable building solutions.

這星期介紹一種大家都看過，卻不一定知道它也可以拿來做prefab(預製)的材料：
稻草(註一)

從人類開始有農耕活動的史前時期，就有把草桿拿來作為建築材料的紀錄；
到了近代由於工業化農作發明了稻草綑包機 (hay baler)，
可以把作物收成後的草桿打包成固定形狀和大小的草綑，
就有人把腦筋動到怎樣把這些看起來像大型砌塊的材料進行廢物利用。
這種技術和材料，因傳統建築材料短缺(磚和木材)，開始在19世紀北美的農業大州流行。

最近因為生態和減碳議題開始普遍受到重視，
能快速生長，有固碳作用的straw bale，和竹子及其它木製建築材料及構件，
開始重新受建築行業的關注，同時加速製造方式的改良和新產品的發展。

Straw bale提供了極好的隔熱性能，同時也是非常環保的選擇。
不同其它常見的人造建材，如發泡保溫棉、玻璃棉、塑料合成製品，
Straw bale是幾乎天然（差點想寫無副作用）
而且可完全自然分解的材料，同時可以調節室內溫濕度。

Straw bale construction, an ancient technique, is making a modern comeback due to its sustainability and energy efficiency. Originating in late 19th century Nebraska, it became popular because traditional building materials were scarce.
Today, eco-conscious builders are rediscovering its benefits. Straw bales offer excellent thermal and acoustic insulation and are remarkably eco-friendly. They are a cost-effective solution, especially in agricultural areas where straw is abundant. Additionally, their density makes them surprisingly fire-resistant. However, they can be susceptible to moisture and pests if not properly maintained. In North America, the straw bale movement has grown significantly. Recent advancements include prefabricated straw bale panels that integrate with modern construction techniques, offering faster and more reliable building solutions.

這星期介紹一種大家都看過，卻不一定知道它也可以拿來做prefab(預製)的材料：
稻草(註一)

從人類開始有農耕活動的史前時期，就有把草桿拿來作為建築材料的紀錄；
到了近代由於工業化農作發明了稻草綑包機 (hay baler)，
可以把作物收成後的草桿打包成固定形狀和大小的草綑，
就有人把腦筋動到怎樣把這些看起來像大型砌塊的材料進行廢物利用。
這種技術和材料，因傳統建築材料短缺(磚和木材)，開始在19世紀北美的農業大州流行。

最近因為生態和減碳議題開始普遍受到重視，
能快速生長，有固碳作用的straw bale，和竹子及其它木製建築材料及構件，
開始重新受建築行業的關注，同時加速製造方式的改良和新產品的發展。

Straw bale提供了極好的隔熱性能，同時也是非常環保的選擇。
不同其它常見的人造建材，如發泡保溫棉、玻璃棉、塑料合成製品，
Straw bale是幾乎天然（差點想寫無副作用）
而且可完全自然分解的材料，同時可以調節室內溫濕度。
此外，生長快速(竹子也是)，是比樹木在固碳上更好的選擇，
加上容易就近取材，可以減少運輸的碳排放。

Staw bale (稻草磚)的現代的制程，可以用新的壓制技術來提高它的其密度，
加上外表的灰泥，可以達到一般住宅需要的防火規範要求。

[EN]: Visit the WHAT Museum’s Sense of Structure exhibition, which will run until August 25 and feature a lunar base by JAXA.
The base, designed by Jun Sato, is a foldable, expandable metal balloon to minimize space transport volume.
The exhibition includes models and documentaries on folding and deployment research.
Sato’s impressive collaborations include Sou Fujimoto, Junya Ishigami, and Kengo Kuma projects.

今天帶大家去看一個展覽，
也介紹一位日本的結構設計師給大家認識。

這是 WHAT Museum 正在進行，到今年八月25日的展覽：Sense of Structure 的其中一部份
由JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency，日本的航太中心)等研發的月球基地。

這個基地的主體是一個像利樂包(比喻)一樣可以折疊、膨脹的金屬氣球，
透過可以延展的支架，和可折疊的太陽能板相互連接構成一組可以自動展開的系統。
設計目標是運用折疊實現體積最小化，以利於太空運輸。

展出現場有很多對折疊、收展所作的研究模型，和紀錄影片，
本來這個太空主題混在建築構造展裡，是有點突兀、容易不小心就走馬看花的過場，
但偏偏這個月面基地構造的主持設計師不是一般人，是佐藤淳 (Jun Sato)。

佐藤淳有多強?
盤點那些Jun Sato經手的案子，和合作過的那些個性建築師就可以看出一二：

藤本壯介 - 武藏野美術大學美術館/圖書館。
石上純也 - 2019 Serpentine Pavilion，Balloon，KAIT Plaza (註一)。
隈研吾 - 星巴克太宰府店，微熱山丘青山店，GC口腔科學博物館，雲上的圖書館等。

Jun Sato曾經在培育無數日本新銳構造設計師的木村俊彥事務所工作 (註二)
他同時也是東京大學的教授和Stanford的客座教授。

從他的寫作，不難看出他對創新領域構造系統，還有對"輕" 的追求。

這個月球基地，也讓人聯想到他和石上純也合作的Balloon，
讓一噸重的金屬氣球，超現實又脫離物性的懸浮在空中的景象。

在展覽的後半，有一個很長的，對話日本當代的結構設計師的紀錄影片，
我看了半個小時還沒完，回家繼續看YouTube版本(連結放在下方)，

裡面印象最深刻的就是包括佐藤淳、佐佐木睦朗等都提到他們執行過最成功的案子，
都是從理解建築師的想法開始的，尤其是佐佐木睦朗說到，
當他看到伊東豊雄拿出仙台媒體中心的剖面草圖，在和他說明設計理念後，
他內心開始產生共鳴，到決定幫建築師想辦法實踐的這段。
如果沒有共鳴，就很難進入到設計的狀態，他們的角色也就是純粹進行計算工作和執行設計結果。

這也算是一個對專業的尊重體現出來的，體現在結果上的差距吧?
包括訪談中提到的，要和現場一工匠對話，理解他們的想法，才能將設計調整成更好，也更合理的狀態這部份。

真的是不錯的展覽，如果在今年八月前有機會前往東京，記得不要錯過(展覽連結一樣下在底下)。
其它的結構展出內容，我會在下一星期用另一個篇幅介紹。
這篇我把Balloon，和KAIT Plaza的照片放在最後。

註一：神奈川工科大學KAIT，有另一個先於Plaza完成的案子，KAIT 工房，也是石上純也極限設計下的神之操作，用305根或承重或受拉力的扁鋼構成的學界經典；結構設計是曾在佐佐木睦朗手下工作的小西泰孝。KAIT Plaza由小西泰孝進行結構規畫，由佐滕淳接續完成結構設計。

註二：木村俊彥(1926-2009)曾在前川國男建築事務所工作過，曾經參與設計槙文彥、篠原一男、磯崎新、安藤忠雄等大師作品；事務所培養出來的，有渡邊邦夫(Tokyo Forum、Yokohama Terminal)、佐佐木睦朗(Sendai Mediatheque等幾乎包辦所有伊東豊雄、妹島和世和SANAA的項目)、池田昌弘(手塚建築專用?)，佐藤淳(見本文)等名構造師。

Every time I visit Tokyo, I can't help but think of Seiichi Shirai’s architecture, especially the Shoto Museum of Art in Shibuya. Despite three attempts, I’ve always been turned away due to closures or exhibit changes. Staying near Azabudai, I explored local architecture, including Shirai's NOA building. Known for its mysterious, heavy, and almost oppressive design, Shirai's work integrates philosophy and architecture. NOA stands out with its contrast to the surroundings, unique materials, and reflective surfaces, though it's not accessible to the public.
每次來東京，越來越難放下的就是白井晟一(Seiichi Shirai)的建築，就是在涉谷的松濤美術館(Shoto Museum of Art)。
因為，我已經三次被拒於門外，不是休館，就是換展
到了不知道該認命，放棄，還是隨緣的程度
剛好這次住在麻布台旁邊
有晨跑習慣的我，也就順便在跑步的時候把附近的建築看了一輪
除了麻布台之丘和東京塔，這裡也有白井晟一的作品，就是NOA。

盤點那些非建築本科出身的建築師，白井晟一可以名列其中
1905年生，經歷二戰，留學海德堡學習哲學
歸國後往建築設計發展的作品，給人一種神秘、厚重，甚至如深淵般的壓迫感
外表幾乎沒有的開窗，傳統的材料，深色粗糙的材質，異常的比例，都是對觀者無聲的吶喊。

這種把哲學思想注入到設計裡，但又晦暗不明的過程
實在讓人好奇建築師的心理狀態，這種內省/向，又幾乎和外在隔絕的空間，會給空間的使用者帶來什麼樣的感受?

NOA這棟建築，除了和周圍環境形成極端反差，只在八或九樓有帶狀開窗的塔樓，和糙面磚的底座是它的主要特色，對於材料和細部的處理，我最喜歡的是材料可以留下時間的刻痕，自然不突兀的和它不自然的開口形成的巨大反差，以及拱形入口內側使用鏡面般的黑色花崗石將外部的街景及拱形入口反射在拋光石材表面，由重到輕，由外到內的轉換。

可惜這裡面是進不去的，至於原本可以進去的松濤美術館
只能留給下次，和放在最後(一張)了。

A #thermalcamera can highlight those cold spots, some you may never know exist; this tool points out problem areas and where to improve in energy retrofit.
